It also manufactures professional radio equipment, passenger information and security solutions - for rail operators, local public transport, highways, waterways and airports. However, these systems are not only used on the mobility arteries of our society, but also for the protection of buildings, squares, industrial objects, facilities and people. Funkwerk's radio systems are pioneering: the GSM-R digital train radio communication network, for example, is the communication standard in European rail transport. More than 80% of all trains on lines equipped with GSM-R maintain contact with the control centers via train radios from Funkwerk. The company is currently researching and developing the future FRMCS train radio standard.

The origins of the company date back to September 1945: founded as Neutrowerk GmbH, nationalization as VEB Funkwerk Kölleda followed three years later. At this time, the company produces electronic equipment and develops into a specialist for electro-acoustic systems, radios and - hearing aids. At that time, the company was still a long way from the train radio systems for which it is known today. The first ones are produced only in 1981.

The company in its current form was founded in 2000 and to this day counts well-known companies among its customers: Deutsche Bahn AG, the French national railroad SNCF, the Swiss national railroad SBB and the European Central Bank. Following restructuring in the wake of the 2008 economic crisis, Funkwerk now has three major divisions: mobile communications systems for rail-bound traffic (train radio), passenger information systems and video systems. Funkwerk's main site is in Kölleda, about 40 kilometers northeast of Erfurt. Four other sites are located in Karlsfeld, Nuremberg, Berlin and Vienna.
